Recent Developments in Respiratory Care: How has respiratory care improved?

So much has been achieved in the management of airways disease since the former National Respiratory Training Centre was first established in 1987. Nurses have become central to the delivery of respiratory care in primary and secondary settings. 20 years ago the only specialist respiratory nurses where in large teaching hospitals. In regards for practice nurses there was fewer than 800 in the country, undertaking mainly treatment room work. The Education for Health decided to complete a survey on the role of practice nurses in respiratory diease and on how services in primary care are now organised. This was intended to be a celebration of its work and progress however, the results showed some worrying findings.
